How to Find & Trade Stage 2 Uptrends
Successful trading requires identifying the transition from market neglect to institutional accumulation. According to legendary traders Stan Weinstein and Mark Minervini, every stock moves through a four-stage life cycle.
The most profitable opportunities occur when a stock moves from Stage 1 Accumulation into a Stage 2 Uptrend.
Stage 1: The Accumulation Base
Stage 1 is the neglect phase. The stock has stopped declining and begins to move sideways. The price moves in a range between a clear floor (support) and ceiling (resistance).
The 30-week (150-day) moving average loses its downward slope and begins to flatten out. Volume typically dries up as sellers are exhausted and strong hands quietly build positions. Investors often buy here out of hope. However, a stock can stay in Stage 1 for months or many years. You lose opportunity time by sitting in a base.
The Stage 2 Breakout
A stock officially enters Stage 2 when it breaks through the resistance of the Stage 1 base. Look for a price breakout on volume that is significantly higher than the average (ideally 100%+ above average). High volume indicates that large institutions are buying. This demand provides the fuel for a sustained move.
Stage 2: The Advancing Phase
This is where the majority of stock market wealth is created. The stock makes a consistent series of higher highs and higher lows.
The 30-week moving average slopes upward. In a healthy Stage 2, the price remains above this rising average. Mark Minervini’s Trend Template suggests buying as the stock emerges from the base or on the first constructive pullback (the cheat) within the new uptrend.
Real-World Examples
$SHMD: Built a long Stage 1 IPO base throughout 2025 before a violent Stage 2 breakout in early 2026.
$VPG: Consolidated for nearly a decade in a Stage 1 base. The breakout above monthly resistance confirmed the start of Stage 2.
$DOCN: Shifted from a Stage 4 decline into a multi-year Stage 1 accumulation base before its recent breakout.
$CLS: In 2023, shifted from a decade Stage 1 base into a Stage 2 uptrend and made a 1,000%+ move by 2025.
Stop trying to bottom-fish in Stage 4. Wait for the Stage 1 base to form and buy the early Stage 2.
